The 4×4 model Cougar Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle, manufactured by General Dynamics Land Systems, boasts a 3-door design, runs on diesel, and can carry up to 3 tons with its 4-wheel drive capability. This formidable vehicle, equipped with an automatic transmission, can accommodate a driver, co-driver, and four additional passengers, each secured with a 4-point safety harness.
Featuring dual A/C units, NBC overpressure and filter protection, and a 9,000-pound capacity electrically powered winch, the Cougar ensures comfort and safety for its occupants. Its versatile design allows for both on and off-road travel, supported by run-flat tire inserts, and it is air transportable by the C-17.
The Cougar-H variant offers comprehensive protection against 7.62mm ammunition, with the glass capable of withstanding multi-strikes of the same caliber. Its armor package extends protection to critical components such as the radiator, tires, battery compartment, fuel tanks, engine, and transmission. Specifically engineered with a V-shaped hull, the Cougar-H deflects blast forces away from the passenger area, ensuring the safety of its occupants even in the event of an explosion.
Originating from the need for vehicles capable of withstanding explosive threats encountered during combat operations in Afghanistan and Iraq, the Cougar is part of the MRAP family designed to counter Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and ambush tactics. Developed by Force Protection Inc. since 2004, the Cougar’s lineage traces back to the Olifant Manufacturing Company of South Africa, renowned for its innovative “V” shaped blast hull design introduced in the 1980s.
Built for speed, endurance, and passenger survivability, the Cougar and its predecessors have proven essential assets in ensuring the safety and effectiveness of military operations in hostile environments.
