Google Maps is set to receive upcoming updates aimed at simplifying trip planning for electric vehicle (EV) drivers, particularly in locating charging stations. The addition of artificial intelligence in Google Maps will enhance the discovery of “hidden” charging stations, including those situated in multi-story parking structures.
This advancement will provide detailed descriptions of the EV chargers, such as instructions like “navigate to the underground parking area and follow the directional signage towards the exit. Shortly before reaching the exit, make a right turn”.

Google states that these improvements are made possible through the utilization of data from user reviews. Furthermore, users will have the ability to rate individual charging locations by sharing insights regarding wait times, availability of different charging ports (CCS, CHAdeMO, Tesla), and other relevant details. This feature has the potential to mitigate the risk of arriving at a non-functional charging station.
Additionally, details such as plug availability and charging speed will be accessible for display on the in-car map, ensuring that drivers don’t expend valuable range searching for an available charger. This information will also be automatically displayed as the state of charge reaches a certain level.
Embarking on a journey in an electric vehicle can be daunting, but Google Maps will recommend optimal charging locations, even for longer trips. The app can suggest ideal charging stops based on factors like trip duration, final destination, and battery status.
Google plans to roll out these updates in the coming months, with vehicles equipped with Google integration (such as select Volvo models) being the first to receive the update. Initially, this service will be available in the United States.
