History

The OTO Melara Mod. 56 Howitzer was developed in the late 1940s by the Italian arms manufacturer OTO Melara. It was designed to replace the aging World War II-era artillery pieces in service with the Italian Army.

The first prototype of the Mod. 56 Howitzer was produced in 1954, and the weapon entered service with the Italian Army in 1956. It quickly gained a reputation for its exceptional performance and became a mainstay of Italian artillery units.

Design

The Mod. 56 Howitzer features a simple yet robust design, which contributes to its reliability and ease of use. It is a towed, single-barrel weapon with a split trail carriage that allows for easy maneuverability.

The howitzer has a calibre of 105mm and a maximum range of 11,500 meters. It weighs around 3,400 kilograms and can be transported by a variety of vehicles, including trucks and helicopters.

One of the notable features of the Mod. 56 Howitzer is its vertical sliding breech mechanism, which simplifies the loading process and increases the rate of fire. The weapon has a semi-automatic firing system that allows for rapid and precise artillery support.
